The 4x50 metre freestyle relay as run at a national school sports meet: four swimmers from one school each swim a single length in turn, and the team's combined time decides the result.

The 4x50 metres freestyle relay is a team race in which four swimmers each cover 50 metres of freestyle, one after another, and the finishing time of the fourth swimmer is the team's time. Freestyle means any stroke may be used, and in practice every swimmer uses front crawl. Only the first swimmer starts from the block in the usual way; the other three start by diving in as their teammate arrives.

What makes a relay different from an individual sprint is the changeover. The swimmer waiting on the block must not leave it until the incoming teammate has touched the wall. A swimmer who leaves early, even by a fraction, can see the whole team disqualified, so the changeover is practised as carefully as the swim. A good exchange gains a tenth of a second or more, which is often the difference between medals.

A team is made up of four swimmers from the same school and the same field. In this template there are four relay fields: Junior boys and Junior girls (under 17) and Senior boys and Senior girls (under 19). The order of swimmers is decided by the team and given to the officials before the race, and a sensible order puts a reliable starter first and the strongest finisher last.

The result is a time in minutes, seconds and hundredths. The template carries a nominal five-minute limit with a four-minute warning for the scoring screen; the race itself takes a small fraction of that, and a coordinator can ignore or tighten the figures. In this template a Gold finish carries 5 bonus points, Silver 3 and Bronze 1.

What judges look at in 4x50 meters Freestyle Relay

What a 4x50 meters Freestyle Relay panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Team finishing time: the fastest legal team wins, so the changeovers count as much as the swimming
  • Changeover legality: the next swimmer's feet must not leave the block before the incoming swimmer touches the wall, and an early exit disqualifies the team
  • Swimmer order: the order declared before the race must be the order swum, and a swimmer may not swim twice
  • Freestyle compliance: the swimmer must not walk or push off the bottom and must finish the length on the surface
  • Team eligibility and records: all four swimmers must belong to the same school and field, and lane times must be recorded and checked before ranks are published

How to prepare for 4x50 meters Freestyle Relay

How entrants and their teachers usually get 4x50 meters Freestyle Relay right on the day:

  • Pick the order by evidence: time each swimmer over a length from a dive and from a changeover, then place the best finisher last
  • Practise changeovers every session with a partner, until the exit from the block is timed to the touch with a safe margin
  • Train each swimmer to hold a fast, relaxed sprint for a full length without breathing in the last few strokes
  • Agree a signal and a place to stand so the waiting swimmer sees the incoming swimmer clearly and early
  • Rehearse the declaration of order and check that all four names and fields match the entry before the race
  • Keep a reserve swimmer warm and ready, since a late withdrawal changes the whole order
  • Warm up with a few dives and short sprints, and avoid a heavy meal in the final hour
