A solo flamenco singing round in the cartageneras style, one of the mining songs of south-east Spain, sung to guitar and marked out of 100.

Cante - Grupo I: Cartageneras is a solo singing round for one of the cantes mineros, the family of flamenco songs that grew out of the mining districts of south-east Spain. The cartagenera is sung slowly and with a free pulse, a long melodic line carrying a short verse, and the singer is accompanied by a flamenco guitarist. The competitor chooses how to phrase each line, where to breathe and how far to ornament it.

In the competition the cante is not a single open class. The rules the template is built from place the cartageneras in Grupo I, together with the tarantas and the murcianas and other mining cantes, and keep them apart from the fandango-derived cantes of Grupo II and the larger palo groups of Grupo III. A singer entering Grupo I is therefore judged against others singing the same family of songs rather than against a bulerias or a soleá.

The template carries it as an individual item open to both genders in the Open (16+) group, sung in Spanish, scored as Marks out of 100 with a ten-minute limit on the clock. Entry in the source competition is by online or postal application with a photograph, a short biography, a video and a bank certificate, the minimum age is 16 and former winners of the top trophy are barred. Those entry conditions are organiser rules; the template records the item, the group, the clock and the score.

An organiser runs it as a heat-based round. The source competition moves through a video screening, regional selection rounds, semi-finals and a final, and on eTalenter the same item can be scored again at each stage so a coordinator reuses the setup and carries the advancing singers forward.

Where Cante - Grupo I: Cartageneras is run

On eTalenter this item is used in one template, built from the published rules of a long-running flamenco singing, guitar and dance contest held in La Unión in the Murcia region of Spain. The cartagenera itself belongs to the Cartagena and La Unión mining tradition, so contests elsewhere that include it are mostly flamenco festivals and peñas in Spain; each event's own notice sets its classes and rules.

What judges look at in Cante - Grupo I: Cartageneras

What a Cante - Grupo I: Cartageneras panel is actually weighing up, and where the marks are usually won or lost:

  • Command of the cante: the singer must show they know how the cartagenera is built, with its slow melodic line, its pauses and its closing phrase, rather than treating it as a generic ballad
  • Voice and breath control: sustained notes held in tune across the long lines, clean breaths placed at the end of a thought and not in the middle of a word
  • Rhythm and compás: the cartagenera is sung with a free pulse, so the panel listens for how well the singer stays in step with the guitar through the pauses
  • Expression and ornament: melismas and ornaments that belong to the song and serve the verse, not decoration added for effect
  • Interpretation of the text: clear, correctly pronounced Spanish, with the feeling of the verse carried in the voice
  • The template records one total out of 100 and does not print a split; a panel that wants separate headings agrees its own before the round

How to prepare for Cante - Grupo I: Cartageneras

How entrants and their teachers usually get Cante - Grupo I: Cartageneras right on the day:

  • Read the notice first for the time limit, the group, the entry deadline and whether the round is a video screening, a live round or both
  • Choose verses you can sing with full conviction; a short, well-judged selection beats a long one that tires the voice
  • Rehearse with the guitarist who will accompany you, and agree the key, the introduction and the way the guitar will follow your pauses
  • Practise the long lines on one breath plan: mark where you breathe and keep it the same on the day
  • Record yourself and listen for pitch drift on held notes and for words that are not clear
  • Warm the voice before the round and keep to a calm routine, because a slow song exposes nerves
  • After a loss, ask which of command of the cante, breath, rhythm or expression cost the most and rehearse that alone for the next round
  • Ideas, not rules: listen to older and newer recordings of the same cante side by side and note how each singer places the ornaments, then decide which phrases you will keep plain
