Classical Ensemble Competition: What It Is, Where It's Run and How It's Judged

A group of three or more players performs one piece of classical-style chamber music together, judged as a single ensemble on balance, intonation and shared musical direction.

A classical ensemble class brings three or more young musicians onto the stage to play one piece together. The group might be a string trio, a flute and clarinet quartet, a mixed wind and piano group or a small school chamber band, and the music is usually written for several parts so that every player has something real to contribute. What the adjudicator wants is one musical conversation, not a soloist with helpers.

A round is short and orderly. The group walks on, settles, tunes quietly to each other, and plays its piece from the music or from memory as the event rules allow. The adjudicator listens first for whether the players agree on pitch and pulse, then for balance between the parts, clean entries and endings together, and whether the phrasing is shaped as a group. A rushed start or a part that drowns the others shows up at once.

On paper an entry is one named group with a list of performers and one piece that fits the time limit for the age band. The British template using this class sets three bands, 11 and under, 14 and under and 18 and under, with the limits growing as the performers do. Organisers like the class because it gives school and community groups a place to compete that is not a solo or a choir, and it rewards rehearsal as much as talent.

Because the group is judged as one entry, a single weak line is not hidden by strong neighbours. A well-chosen piece in which each player has a fair share of the tune, and no part is much harder than the rest, usually beats an ambitious arrangement that only half the group can manage.

How to prepare for Classical Ensemble

How entrants and their teachers usually get Classical Ensemble right on the day:

• Choose a piece written for your exact combination of instruments, or arranged for it, and check every part is playable by the weakest player
• Rehearse together weekly from the start, not each part alone and then once at the end
• Practise starting and finishing together, including how you will breathe or nod in, because entries are where marks slip first
